Angon
The Angon is a Lance or Javelot frankly of which iron with the shape of a harpoon. Certain authors supported, like the Huet scientist, who it was about the paramount type of the Fleur of lily which became the royal badge. But the discovery of this weapon in tombs of the people of the Angles, lets believe that it was not the exclusiveness in the frank warriors.
It was however one of the rarest weapons but also most singular of the franque period. The first author who seems to have mentioned this weapon is “Agathias”, a writer of low times, which describes in the second volume of sound Histoire of the time of Justinien , this weapon of jet in these terms:
“the angon is a spade, neither too long, nor too short, which can be launched if need be, but which is also specific to defense and the attack. This small swath is almost entirely out of iron, and only the handle is made up out of wood. At the higher end of the weapon (the point), are two species of hooks bent towards the pole and rather similar to the hooks of a hook.
When the angon is launched on an enemy and that it penetrates in the flesh, it engages there so much that it cannot be extracted about it without returning the wound mortal; if this weapon strikes a shield, it is planted there so deeply that its “hooks” make any extraction impossible: it remains suspended then there, sweeping the ground by its end: the frank warrior does not have any more but to precipitate, put the foot on the handle of the javelin to discover the body of his adversary and to kill it using his sword.
Sometimes, the angon is attached to a cord, is used as harpoon and it any more but does not remain to draw on this one to bring the enemy to range of the swords. ”
(Account of the Battle of Casilinum in 555, gained by Narsès on the Frank and the Alamans).
First discovered of a weapon of this kind was made with the cemetery mérovingien of Envermeu, in 1856.
