Angelus

The Angélus is a prayer Catholique which commemorates the Annonciation. It draws its name from its first words, “Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariæ”. It constitutes three texts describing the mystery. She is recited in Versicule and in Répons with the greeting “I greet you Marie! ”

This devotion is recited in the Catholic church three times per day, with 6:00, at midday and 18:00 but these hours can vary according to work and the areas. At these hours a bell of the Angelus is sounded. This bell is still sounded in certain churches of countryside, but often it was believed that it was a continuation of the bell of the curfew. In Ireland, public television channel RTE 1 continues to diffuse the bell of the Angelus the every day at 6 p.m.

The institution of the Angelus is allotted by certain to the pope Urbain II, by others with the pope Jean XXII. One allots the origin of triple recitation to Louis XI of France (1472).

Ave Maria, gratia plena, Dominus tecum. Benedicta you in mulieribus, and benedictus fructus ventris tui, Jesus.
