Angel Wagenstein

Angel Wagenstein , scenario writer and Bulgarian writer, born the October 17th 1922 with Plovdiv (Bulgaria).

Born in a Bulgarian family of Jewish origin Séfarade, Angel Wagenstein passed its childhood in exile to Paris (France) where its family took refuge to flee the repression of the Bulgarian authorities of the time with regard to the members of the movements Socialiste S and Communiste S. It turns over in its country to the favor of an amnesty and, still high-school pupil, militates in an organization Antifasciste then prohibited. Acts of sabotage are worth to him to be interned in a Camp of work of which he escapes to join the rows of the Partisans. Denounced, stopped, tortured and condemned to died in 1944, it owes its safety only on arrival of the Red Army .

At the end of the war, it follows cinematographic studies to Moscow (Russia) and signs thereafter the scenarios of a score of feature films, rewarded by many international distinctions, including, in 1959, the Special price of the jury of the Cannes festival for " Étoiles" , which puts in scene the loves of a German soldier with one off-set Jewish Bulgarian. It also carried out the documentary ones and cartoon films.

In the years 1990, Angel Wagenstein launched out in the writing of novels. " Pentateuque or Five books of Isaac" - which evokes with humor the destiny of the Jews of Central Europe - is an immediate success. More than with its film productions, today a little forgotten, Angel Wagenstein became a writer recognized in the whole of Europe. Its books were translated in many European languages like into Hebrew.
