Andustar

In the Ground of the Medium of Tolkien, Andustar was one of the six areas of the island of Númenor, which sombrit at the Second Age.

The island of Númenor had the shape of a star with five branches, of which each one represented an area. Andustar represented the western area of the island (Andustar meaning " Grounds of the West "). It was bordered by the Forostar in north, by the Hyarnustar in south-west and by the Mittalmar in south-east.

The area was rocky in its Scandinavian part, contrary to its more fertile southernmost part. One found nevertheless large wood on the whole of the area. The area opened in three small bays in direction of the west. The shores rose in withdrawal, out of cliff, which often softened before reaching the sea. The vegetation was rather luxuriant in this area, with in the north of the wood of fir trees, and more in the south, of the wood of birches and beeches in heights and of the wood of oaks and elms in the gullies.

In north the bay of Andunië was, or the city had developed with hillside, and in the south, with the junction of Andustar and the Hyarnustar, the large bay of Eldanna was (named thus because turned towards Eressëa) where Nunduinë was thrown (which fed the Lake Nésinen), in the port of Eldalondë the Green one, the most beautiful port of all Númenor, or wet formerly the naves of the Eldar.

More inside the grounds was what one called the greatest charm of Númenor: trees with the rich person scents and sharp colors brought by the Eldar of the West. And only in this area they pushed, and thus one would remember some in the songs well after their disappearance. They bore the name of Nísimaldar (" Aromatic Trees ") and one counted seven species of them:

  • Oiolairë
  • Lairelossë
  • Nessamelda
  • Vardarianna
  • Taniquelassë
  • Yavannamirë
  • Malinornë
It is known as that their scents were so strong that they embaumaient all the country. Númenoréens had planted some in all the country, but never they pushed as well and also abundantly only in the middle of Andustar. Only Nísimaldar was liked Malinornë and one did not see it pushing in any other place. Malinornë reached at the end of five centuries a height rather close to that in Eressëa. In spring the tree had a color gold and its sheets lasted all the summer. Its trunk was silver plated and its branches rose such those of the birch. Of its fruit, a silver plated nut, the sixth king of Númenor, Tar-Aldarion, made of it gift with the king of the Lindon, Gil-galad. Malinorni did not push however, and Gil-galad made of it gift with Galadriel, which by its capacities made them push in Lothlorien.
