Andris Piebalgs
Andris Piebalgs (born the September 17th 1957), is a Latvian Politician , European Commissioner, in charge of Energy since the November 4th 2004.
The Latvia having, after having given up confirming Sandra Kalniete, having withdrawn Tuesday November 2nd 2004, the candidature of Ingrida Udre for the European commission to replace it by that of Andris Piebalgs, a Diplomatic senior. Mrs. Udre had been proposed at the post of Police chief in charge with taxation and the customs union.
Of Latvian authorized source, one specifies that the president of the Commission, Jose Manuel Durão Barroso, had asked for the replacement of Udre. It had been chosen by the First Latvian outgoing minister Indulis Emsis, but its candidature upon the departure had been discussed, because it had acknowledged in Barroso which it was rather located in the camp of the Eurosceptics.
Minister for Education then Finances in the first years of Latvia post-Communist, Andris Piebalgs is a specialist in the European questions. He was ambassador near the European Union and directed the team of Udre charged to prepare the hearing of the latter in front of the the European Parliament.
