Andrew hurricane

the hurricane Andrew was one of most destroying which struck the the United States. It made rage of the August 16th 1992 in the North-West of the the Bahamas and taken end the August 28th 1992 in the center of the Louisiana after having crossed the south of the Florida and the area of Miami.

Andrew because 26 billion dollars of damage (45 billion dollars in 2005). It was most prejudicial after the Ouragan Hugo and was exceeded only by the Ouragan Katrina in 2005

Formation of Andrew

Andrew started modestly as tropical storm which emerged from the Western coast of the Africa on August 14th. The storm gives rise to a cyclone on August 16th. The development of the cyclone was slow, because of an unfavourable wind.

Seriously touched by five important hurricanes between 1944 and 1950, the south of Florida had not known serious natural disasters for four decades. It is besides why the first information about the cyclone did not worry the population.

At the dawn of August 22nd, 1992, the winds had reached a considerable speed, but it was believed that the hurricane followed a trajectory which passed largely to the north of Florida. Unfortunately, the situation even worsened the evening. The winds intensified and changed direction to move towards Miami, on the point of the Florida.

The evening of August 23rd, television and the radio American diffused messages of alarm and more than one million people left their hearth, by facing the strong winds and the pouring rain. Those which remained, took refuge in concrete shelters.

After the devastations made on the Eleuthera island, the cyclone crossed the Gulf of Mexico and arrived in Louisiana where it made damage for two billion dollars and killed four people.

Then, the morning of August 24th, 1992, the Andrew cyclone arrived in Florida. It made rage in the suburbs densément populated of Miami, where 355.000 people lived of which 54 were killed. It started a tide of five meters high storm which flooded the littoral of the south of Miami, destroying a hundred houses and buildings.

It destroyed more than 15,000 ships, projecting them the ones on the others in water of the port of South Gables. The Andrew cyclone reached approximately 800 kilometers in diameter. The winds more violent ones, 320 km/h, dug a destroying furrow of 40 kilometers broad, enough powerful to make reverse a building. They precipitated boats on the strike, reversed enormous trucks and of small planes, made fall the trees, burst the windows of the houses and tore off their roof. The winds also destroyed the caravans of camp-site. Even if it spent only two hours to Florida, the Andrew cyclone destroyed 80.000 dwellings, damaged 55.000 others of them. The most touched area was the suburbs of Homestead. This area was private of electricity and running water. It is estimated that 25.000 people definitively left Florida after the passage of Andrew. Indeed, the area was completely devastated. Multiple remains strewed the lawns with the residential districts. Almost all the trees were uprooted and an enormous quantity of trunks and branches piled up on the grounds. The water of the coasting harbors was filled with remains such of the pieces of house or trees, which polluted it. A long time after his passage, one found traces of the Andrew cyclone. Even if this catastrophe does not have affected the air, pollution that caused is important since the remains polluted the rivers and the grounds. Inter alia, at the time of the passage of Andrew, the aquatic environments were disturbed involving a modification of the ecosystem of the aquatic animals and terrestrial. Many animals perished because of all its chamboulements. The men with their installations which prove often useful amplified extended from the damage. Because let us take for example a station of gasoline or better a refinery: under the passage of Andrew its components excessively polluting could be released in water and the ground. In the same way certain toxic products because of this catastrophe could be released. Pollution was thus enormous in what milked costs of repair which were of 25.000.000 dollars. The Andrew cyclone is the most expensive natural disaster of all the history of the United States.
