Andreas Floer
Andreas Floer (August 23rd 1956 - May 15th 1991) is a German Mathématicien having contributed to the fields of the Géométrie, the Topologie and the Mathematical physics. He formulated the Homologie of Floer, important tool in the above mentioned fields.
Biography
He is student with the Université from the Ruhr in Bochum and receives the diploma of mathematics ( Diplom-Mathematiker ) in 1982. He integrates thereafter the the University of California (Berkeley), in which he begins a work of doctorate on the monopoly S and the 3-varieties under the direction of Clifford Taubes. He stops his thesis to take share with the obligatory alternative service which he must carry out in Germany. He is received doctor in Bochum in 1984, under the supervision of Eduard Zehnder.
The first major contribution of Floer is a solution on a particular case of the Conjecture of Arnold about the fixed points of a Symplectomorphisme. Its work on the conjecture of Arnold and its development of the homology which bears its name offers him a recognition of the mathematical medium. It for example is invited like plenary lecturer for the international Congrès of mathematics of Kyoto in August 1990. It receives a Sloan Fellowship in 1989.
It becomes Assistant Professor in 1988 with Berkeley, then Full Professor in mathematics in 1990. From 1990, he is mathematics professor with the Université from the Ruhr in Bochum, until his sudden and unexpected suicide.
Quotations
The life of Andreas Floer was tragically stopped, but its mathematical visions and its striking contributions provided powerful methods which are applied to problems which seemed intractables only a few years ago .
Simon Donaldson wrote: The concept of homology of Floer is one of the most relevant developments in differential geometry over these 20 last years… The ideas led to large projections in the fields of topology with low dimension and the symplectic geometry and are closely connected to the developments in theory of the quantum field and the total richness of the theory of Floer only starts to be explored .
Since its introduction by Andreas Floer at the end of the years 1990, the theory of Floer had an incredible influence on many branches of mathematics, including the dynamic geometry, topology and systems. The development of the new theoretical tools of Floer continuous at remarkable intervals and is at the base of advanced most recent in these research fields .
