Andreanof islands
The Îles Andreanof form a group of islands of the Aleutian Islands in the south-west of the Alaska. It extend on approximately 440 kilometers and were named thus by a Russian navigator, Andreian Tolstyk, which was the first to explore them in 1761.
They are located between Amchitka Pass and Rat Islands in the west groups it and Amukta Pass and groups it islands of the 4 mountains in the Northern east, approximately 52° and between 172°57' and 179°09' Western. The total surface area of the islands (by including the Delarof islands) is of 3.924.737 km ². The total population is of 412 people (with the last American census of 2000), the majority living on the island of Adak in the homonymous village.
The islands Delarof, a sub-group of the Andreanof islands, are the most Western islands.
The largest Andreanof islands are, of west in east:
- Gorelei
- Amatigras
- Tanaga
- Kanaga Island,
- Tagalak
- Great Sitkin
- Atka
- Amlia
- Seguyam.
These islands are usually misty and the wind blows there in an almost constant way what involved the absence of trees. Many earthquakes occur each year on these islands of which much magnitude higher than 5.
Some military bases étasuniennes were built on these islands during the Second world war. The bases of the Adak island were increased and became permanent after the war but were then closed in 1995 at the end of the cold war.
