Andrea Pozzo is a Jésuite and an Italian painter born the November 30th 1642 and deceased the August 31st 1709. He was a theorist of the prospect in painting and architecture with his treaty Perspectiva pictorum and architectorum .

He into practice put his theories by carrying out in 1685 the masterly vault (17m) of the church of Sant' Ignazio di Loyola at Rome, dedicated to Saint Ignace de Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus.

It is about a realization of horn the eye while following very precise calculations to the prospect. Thus Pozzo painted steps, pillars, balconies thus creating an attractive imaginary architecture. At the top the vault opens on the sky and of the twists of clouds the pilasters surround, carrying angels or saints. This complicated architecture of columns and populated balconies characters is painted on a simple vault in half-circle. To admire this ceiling open on the skies, it is necessary to be placed in a place announced on the ground, under the Christ who is the point from which all the creepage distances leave. representation of the apotheosis of St Ignace. A luminous ray bathes light Ignace saint which redistributes it with the 4 corners of the world, symbol of the missionary role of the Jesuits.

In 1704, it goes to Vienna (Austria), invited by the sovereign of the time, Léopold Ier. He reiterates the same type of decoration as in Saint-Ignace in the church Jesuit of Vienna: he carries out there in particular a new cupola in trompe-l'oeil. He also paints a gigantic fresco with the ceiling of the palate of Liechtenstein: triumph of Hercules .
