Andrea Gabrieli

Andrea Gabrieli is an Italian type-setter of XVIe century.

Life

It was born towards 1510, probably with Venice. It knew Adrian Willaert there, since it is under its direction with the Basilique Saint-Marc that it began. In 1557, he is organist with Cannaregio, one of the six districts of Venice. It is at that time that it tries to obtain the post of vacant organist with Saint-Marc but does not reach that point. In 1562, he undertakes a voyage in Germany, passes by Francfort-sur-le-Main and Munich where he meets Roland de Lassus. This meeting will modify its style deeply because the type-setter influenced it enormously.

Saint-Marc accommodates it all the same as organist in 1566, with one of the musical places most prestigious of the north of Italy. Its functions lead it to compose several parts for various occasions: victory over the Turks with the battles naval of Lépante in 1571, visits of many Japanese princes in 1586,…

Towards the end of its career, he becomes a professor emeritus and recognized. Among his pupils, one finds his nephew, Giovanni Gabrieli, the theorist Ludovico Zacconi or Hans Leo Hassler (this last about 1584).

One knows little of it on his death. It is supposed that he dies at the latest in 1586 since a good part of its works were published in posthumous title in 1587. Moreover, its career with Saint-Marc seems to be completed in at the end of 1586.

Work

As a type-setter, Andrea Gabrieli leaves us a varied and important work. Sacred music, vocal, mixing groups of voice and instruments or only instrumental… It also wrote more than one hundred Motet S and madrigaux. One can only note the important influence which will have had Roland de Lassus on his style.
