Andrea Camilleri

Andrea Camilleri was born the September 6th 1925 with Oporto Empedocle (Vigàta of its novels), in the Province of Agrigente, in Sicily. It is a Director and a Italian writer . He is an enormous success in Italy like elsewhere, in particular thanks to his novels putting in scene the police chief Montalbano. But its books are well more than detective novels and they entered the prestigious collection of the Meridiani, the " Pleiad " Italian.

Short biography

Only sons in a family of the high-middle-class, but desilvered, Camilleri continues its studies with Palermo where he attends the Bohème. It then begins its career of writer with news and articles for newspapers and reviews as well as poetry.

In 1947, it gains the price of poetry Libera Stampa in front of Pasolini and in 1949, with Florence, a prestigious price for a play, Giudizzi has mezzanotte (Judgment at midnight). During its return voyage in Sicily, it reads again its part and is of it if not very satisfied that it throws it by the window of the train. It was the only specimen.

Some time afterwards, it receives a purse of the Académie of the dramatic arts and leaves Sicily.

It is the beginning of its first career: he is teaching director and theorist of dramatic art. He collaborates in Enciclopedia dello Spettacolo , ensign with the Centro sperimentale di cinematografia.

As a director, he works as well for the Théâtre, the Télévision as the radio. It is at this time that it produces a famous adaptation in Italy of the investigations of the Commissaire Maigret of Simenon. In parallel it continues to write news, but not novels in spite of the encouragements of his friend, another sicilian author, Leonardo Sciascia.

In 1982 finally, in fifty-seven years, it publishes its first novel, soon followed many others. It is its second career, that of the novelist, whose inspiration will follow a double track. As Sciascia, it takes pretext of a real fact various, in Sicily of the 19th century to build an account historico-police officer, or, another followed way, it writes detective novels, with the Montalbano police chief as hero whose investigations proceed in the imaginary city of Vigàta, in Sicily (which resembles its birthplace much).

Style

Camilleri enjoys to exploit the language, mixing Italian and slang Sicilien, at the same time by the vocabulary and syntax, not hesitating to use incomprehensible terms for a not-Sicilian of Agrigente, but whose direction could be interpreted thanks to the context. That gives a language to consonance exotic, foreign, even for the Italians, a personal re-creation of the language of his/her father, truffée of particularisms, who adds to the charm of the intrigue. Few translators knew to return the charm of this French language, if it is not Serge Quadruppani, its more important translator to date.

He does not hesitate either to make us discover all savors of the sicilian Cuisine randomly of the meals of the police chief Montalbano and makes us discover all the attachment which the Sicilians for the ground and the family test.

Lastly, the Montalbano police chief would draw his name from the admiration of Camilleri for Manuel Vázquez Montalbán and his hero Pepe Carvalho, another investigator gastronome.
