Andrea Appiani
Andrea Appiani , born with Milan the May 31st 1754 and died in this same city the November 8th 1817, is a painter Italy neo-classic N.
Biography
Resulting from a modest family, he studied with Milan as from 1769 at the school of Ambrosiana with Carlo Maria Judges, at the large hospital of anatomy with Gaetano Monts, then with Giorgi where he studied Leonardo, Raphaël and Bernardo Luini; in 1776 he attends the academy of Beautiful arts of Brera with Julien Traballesi and Martin Knoller, by looking further into the techniques of the fresco. The documents on its first work goes back to 1777 they are the frescos of the parish of Presses. From 1779 to 1782 it deals with scenography in Milan with the brothers Bernardino and Ferdinand Galliari and of 1783 to 1784 it is with Florence where it attends the school of Dominique Chelli. In 1789 it receives from the archduke of Austria the ordering of a fresco on the topic of the History of the Love and Psyché for the Roundabout of the Greenhouses in the Villa Reale de Monza, Appiani has an artistic personality well defined: it adopts the grace of Greek painting and the softness of Léonard de Vinci. In 1790 and 1791 he travels to study with Rome, Parma, Bologna, Florence and Naples, this also for the realization of his frescos Milanese with Santa Maria presso San Celso, started on June 10th, 1793 and finished in 1795, after those of the Roundabout of the Villa of the Large-duke with Monza, painted on his return of Rome about 1792. From 1795 to 1800 it paints the fresco of the Milanese building Sannazzaro on June 9th, 1796. After the entry of the French in Milan, on May 15th, 1796, the " Corriere Milanese" described its portrait of Napoleon with the battle of Lodi . On this same date it is named " Police chief supérieur" , charged to choose the works of art lombardes and Venetian to send to Paris. In 1797 it belongs to the legislative Body of the République cisalpine and it is charged to prepare the Federative Festival of it on July 9th, 1797. Return of the Austrians in Milan, on April 28th, 1799, with the return of Napoleon, on June 2nd, 1800, Appiani works very little; October 18th, 1800 it is again named Commissaire with works of Article. May 7th, 1801 " the Newspaper of the débats" announces the arrival in Paris of the painter and on May 19th the French government instructs it, with Jacques-Louis David, to deal with the project of the Bonaparte Forum. June 4th, 1801 it is teaching with the academy of Brera and on January 16th, 1802 it is named Commissaire of the Spectacles; April 17th it writes an inventory of the collection archiépiscopale, on March 3rd, 1811, it will choose 23 paintings which they will form part, with others, new Art gallery: Brera, inaugurated on August 5th, 1811. June 16th, 1802 he is member of the jury in the Concorso della Riconoscenza , gained by Giuseppe Bossi; July 12th he writes a report/ratio on degradations of Cène of Léonard de Vinci and on October 15th he is member of the national institute of the Republic Italian; in January 1803 it goes to Bologna and Parma, where it copies the frescos of Corrège in the Room of Paul saint. May 7th, 1803 he is member of the Class of Literature and Art schools of the Institute of France, on June 20th he finishes, at the Palais Royal of Milan, the first 15 episodes of Fasti, a series of monochromic with softening started in 1801. June 26th, 1803 one inaugurates the arena of Milan, project of Appiani, Barbillons and Sanquirico. January 23rd, 1804 a composite commission by Vincenzo Mounts, Giuseppe Bossi and Giuliano Traballesi examines the paperboards of the Apotheosis of Napoleon out of Jupiter triumphant victor and of the Chute of the Giants whose Appiani made the copy according to Francesco Valentini, and which it brought in gift to Napoleon. December 2nd, 1804 it is in Paris, for the crowning of Napoleon as emperor of the French and on May 26th, 1805, in Milan, it takes part in the ceremony of the crowning of Napoleon as King d' Italie with the sculptor Pietro Cure: two weeks after, on June 7th, 1805, it is named first painter of King d' Italie. August 31st, 1805 Eugene de Beauharnais orders to him the preparation of the prints of the Fasti , started with Giuseppe Longhi in 1807 and supplemented only in 1817; July 27th, 1806 it is named knight of the Iron Crown by prince Eugene. In 1808 the frescos of the royal palace of Milan are carried out, mainly destroyed during the second world war, only two works escaped the destruction: the Apotheosis of Napoleon and the four Virtues which are currently with the Carlotta Villa, in Tremezzo, on the lake of Like. The Appiani August 18th, 1808 painted in this only year 16 portraits of Napoleon and the Beauharnais family; between August and September 1811 it paints the Whole of poets in the Villa Reale de Monza and it returns to Rome to belong to the academy of Luc Saint. In 1812, after the Napoleonean defeat in Russia, it stops its fresco of the Fall of the Giants intended for the royal palace. April 28th, 1813 it is struck by an infarction that it leaves it paralyzed, and prevents to him for the remainder of its life from working, by leaving unfinished works for the Royal palace. He dies in his Milanese house of Monforte Corsica in 1817.
