Andre Vauchez , born in 1938, is a French historian. Former student of the National university, aggregate in history, member of the French School of Rome (1965-1968), it specialized in the history of the Sainteté and spirituality medieval. Its thesis on the history of the Canonization and holiness at the end of the Middle Ages, holiness in Occident at the last centuries of the Middle Ages (1198-1431), Research on medieval religious mentalities , constant in 1978, made date.
He was successively assistant and lecturer at the university Paris IV, director of studies for the Middle Ages with the French Ecole of Rome (1972-1979) then senior research worker to CNRS before being a professor of medieval history at the university of Rouen (1980-1982) then to the university Paris X Nanterre (1983-1995) and member of the Academic institute of France. He was director of the French Ecole of Rome of 1995 to 2003.
He is free member of the Académie of the Inscriptions and Belles-Lettres, since 1998, of the Accademia nazionale dei Lincei (Rome), of the Pontificia Accademia romana di Archeologia (the Vatican) and of the royal Académie of Sciences, the Letters and the Art schools of Belgium (Brussels).
He directs the Revue Mabillon .
He is member of the committee of sponsorship of the French Coordination for the Decade of the culture of non-violence and peace.
