André Souris (1899 - 1970) is a member of the group Belgian Surréaliste .

Biography

André Souris is born the July 10th 1899 with Marchienne-with-Bridge and finishes into 1918 of the studies (violin and composition) to the Conservatoire of Brussels then of direction of orchestra. He then discovers neo-classic works Symbolists and, Debussy, Ravel, Stravinski. In 1925 it meets Paul Nougé at the time of a concert which presents for the first time in Belgium the Lunar Pierrot of Schönberg. In margin of " Correspondance" of Nougé, Goemans, Lecomte, it founds " Musique" (two numbers) and publishes with Paul Hooreman " Tomb of Socrate " , homage to Satie, like " Festivals of Venice ". With Hooreman it composes in 1926 the music, parodies Groupe of the Six, " Below cartes" of Nougé. It cosigne the leaflet " Married Eiffel Tower " when the part of Cocteau is played Brussels. Collaborating in its review " Distances" , it composes " Some airs of Clarisse Juranville" , small cantata on a text of Nougé carried out in April 1928 to the Academy of Brussels then in 1930 and 1935. At the time of an exposure of Magritte it directs in January 1929 a concert to Charleroi (Hindemith, Honegger, Milhaud, Schönberg, Souris, Stravinski), preceded by a conference of Nougé on the music.

In 1932 Andre Souris cosigne the leaflet " Poetry transfigurée" on the business Aragon. He collaborates in 1934 in " Documents 34" of E.L.T. Mesens, in 1935 with the " International bulletin of the surréalisme". It cosigne in 1935 " The Knife in the plaie" who joins together for the premère time the surrealist group of Brussels (Magritte, Mesens, Nougé, Scutenaire, Lecomte) and that of the Hainaut (Achille Chavée, Fernand Demoustier, Fernand Dumont). Directing in 1936 a " Mass of Artistes" , André Souris is excluded on January 21st from the surrealist group in a leaflet, " The servant zélé" , in particular signed by Chavée, Dumont, Magritte, Mesens, Nougé and Lecomte).

Andre Souris, who is interested in the old Musique, with the Dodécaphonisme, with the Jazz as with the film music and the ethnic musics, is of 1937 to 1945 leader at the national institute of Broadcasting, in 1945 director of the musical studio of the Seminar of Arts, which plays a great part in the introduction of the Serial music, and founds in 1947 the review " Polyphonie". Having contacts with Karlheinz Stockhausen, it reveals the same year the first work of Pierre Boulez.

From 1949 to 1964 Andre Souris teaches the harmony with the Academy of Brussels and is also research director on the Tablature S of Luth of to CNRS. In 1964, one owes him a transcription and orchestration in version in concert of the Fêtes of Hébé which is a major contribution to the celebration of the centenary of Jean-Philippe Rameau. He writes many film musics, in particular for Le Monde of Paul Delvaux . André Souris dies in Paris the February 12th 1970.
