Andre Roland de Denus
André Roland de Denus (of which the Patronyme is Roland de Denus) is a French born in 1849.
He was member of the Company of geography of Bordeaux and of the archaeological Company of the Dordogne, Company of the fine arts of the Dordogne and lawyer chair (in 1889).
It in particular wrote a Dictionnaire of ethnic names of France and its colonies , where it uses the ethnic term name with the place and place of Gentilé .
This dictionary provides gentilés in entry: for example it is necessary to seek with French and not with France .
Even out-of-date, it is apparently the only dictionary ever published devoted to gentilés of France. One can ajourd' today consult the base of data on line having Habitants.fr which is the continuation of this Dictionnaire .
This work is as well incomplete and its author (page VII) written “ Our Dictionary raises hardly four thousand names ethnic ” and it seems that gentilés of South-west are surreprésentés.
One raises also two presupposed which was not confirmed thereafter:
- “a great number of communes bear the same name and it is advisable, consequently, to give them same ethnic name” (page VII): it is a normative and nondescritif point of view there.
- “Moreover we believe that the majority of the inhabitants of the small communes were never indicated by names of this kind” (page VII).
