Andre Rene Paige

Biography

It made its studies with the college of Mans, entered the ecclesiastical state and obtained the cure of Chemiré-le-Gaudin, on the edges of the the Sarthe. After exerthaving exerted during twenty-five years the functions there pastoral, it was named in 1756 canon of the church of Mans. The communication which it had then of a report on the General information of Turns, written by the intendant Miroménil for the instruction of the Duke of Burgundy, the kind of studies determined to which it was to be delivered.

The Province of Maine lacked a good work of statistics and civil economy; Paige dared to undertake it. After having gathered a great number of memories private individuals, which were addressed to him by the priests of the diocese and by the lords of parish, in answer to a circular which it had published in 1772, it put at the day its Dictionnaire topographic, historical, genealogical and bibliographical of the province and the diocese of Maine , Mans, 1777, 2 vol. in-8°.

This book contains concepts detailed on the natural history, ecclesiastic, civil and literary, agriculture, industry, the trade and arts of each commune. One finds there on Mans, Laval, Mayenne, the Ferté-Bernard, Sablé, Mamers, etc, of the notes and the facts that one would seek vainly elsewhere; but one can reproach this dictionary some inaccurate genealogies. Paige died in Mans the July 2nd 1781.
