Andre Pirro

André Gabriel Edmé Pirro is a Musicologue and Organiste French born with Saint-Dizier (Haute-Marne) the February 12th 1869 and dead the November 11th 1943 with Paris.

It starts to learn the organ with his father Jean Pirro. Then, it leaves to Paris where he is organist and choirmaster to the Stanislas College. It follows as a non-registered student the class of organ of César Franck then of Charles-Marie Widor and joins work of edition of the Schola Cantorum where it gives courses of history of the music. He is organist with Saint Jean-Baptiste of Belleville (1900-1904).

He supports in Sorbonne his thesis: the Esthetic of Bach published in Paris in 1907 followed the same year of a complementary thesis: Descartes of the music (report in Ménestrel , 1907). It is part-time lecturer in the Sorbonne (1912), then lecturer (1927) and full professor (1930). It succeeds Romain Roland with the pulpit of history of the music until its retirement (1937).

Among its best pupils appear: Vladimir Fedorov, Dragan Plamenac, Armand Machabey, Marc Pincherle and Jacques Chailley.

By its very documented work always, it renewed many subjects relating to the music of, Jean-Sebastien Bach and the music of organ. Its book the Harpsichordists made authority at the time or one redécouvrait the Clavecin and the type-setters for this intrument.
