Andre Ours

André Ours (Paris, March 12th 1613 - September 15th 1700) was gardener of the king Louis XIV of 1645 with 1700 and had in particular as a task to conceive the installation of the park of the Palais of Versailles, but also that of Be worth-the-Viscount and Chantilly. He was a very famous courtier and succeeds in binding friendship with Louis XIV. He was the author of the plans of many gardens to the Frenchwoman.

His/her father, Jean Ours, was the gardener of the king Louis XIII.

Biography

  • 1613 : Birth of Andre Ours with Paris, wire of Jean Ours, gardener of the king to the Tileries
  • 1635: Ours is named first gardener of the duke of Orleans
  • 1637: it succeeds his father as gardener of the king to the Tuileries

  • 1643: it is named " draftsman of the seedlings and terrasses" of Anne of Austria
  • 1645 - 1646: it modernizes the gardens of the Château of Fontainebleau
  • 1656 - 1661: it created the gardens of the Castle of Be worth-the-Viscount at the request of Nicolas Fouquet
  • 1657: he becomes general inspector of the buildings of the King
  • 1662: Ours draws the plans of Greenwich for Charles II of England
  • 1662 - 1687: It devotes to the gardens of Versailles
  • 1662 - 1684: Ours transforms for the Large Cop the gardens of the Château of Chantilly
  • 1663 - 1672: It renovates the gardens of the Château of Saint-Germain-in-Bush hammer
  • 1665 - 1693: it arranges and maintains the gardens the Château of Saint-Cloud for Philippe of Orleans
  • 1666 - 1672: Colbert load Ours to embellish the Garden of Tileries
  • 1667: Ours prolongs the prospect for the Tuileries: it is the birth of the Avenue Fields-Élysées
  • 1670 - 1683: Colbert load Ours to alter the gardens of sound Castle of Seals
  • 1670: it conceives a project for the Château of Racconigi in Italy
  • 1674 - 1698: it remakes the gardens of Venaria Reale in Italy
  • 1675: Ours is anobli by the King
  • 1679 - 1691: It intervenes in améngement of the gardens of the Château of Meudon for Louvois
  • 1692: Andre Ours takes part in installations of the castle of Marly-the-King last residence desired of Louis XIV
  • 1693: he ceases working and offers his more beautiful works of art to the King
  • 1694: he sends by letter his instructions for the Château of Charlottenburg and Château of Cassel in Germany
  • 1698: he addresses to Guillaume III of England of the plans for the Château of Windsor
  • 1700: Andre Ours dies with Paris. He is buried with the church Saint-Roch

Its life

A future of gardener

Andre Ours is born in a family from gardeners. His father, his grandfather was responsible for the Jardin of Tileries. Its godfather is controller of the gardens and the husband of its godmother, Claude Mollet, is a famous gardener. Andre thus lives in a family of gardeners and quickly acquires a practical know-how which it supplements of theoretical knowledge.

A studious adolescence

But, it is also attracted by other arts which will return concerned in its future trade of gardener of the King. He learns the Mathématiques, the Peinture and the Architecture. He enters then the workshop of Simon Vouet, painter of the king Louis XIII. He will then learn art from the clacissism and the prospects, and becomes the friend of Charles Le Brun. François Mansart enables him to study architecture during several years.

Towards the forty years age, it decides to become gardener, strong of all the competences acquired during its preceding artistic experiments.

Beginnings of gardener

Andre Ours begins his trade with the project from the gardens of the Château of Be worth-the-Viscount, initiated by Nicolas Fouquet. He works then of coordination with Louis Vau and Charles Le Brun. This building site made of him a famous world gardener.

After the arrest of Fouquet in 1661, André Ours is engaged by Louis XIV to rehabilitate the gardens of Versailles. It draws and carries out then many projects through the France.

End of its life

It intervenes in many projects in France, and trains many disciples, of which its nephew, Claude Desgots. In 1678, it visits the Italy and judges that " the gardens do not approach those of sound pays".

Ours dies at the 87 years age in September 1700. It leaves behind him many gardens arranged with the French recognizable by their perfect prospects and their geometries, known and famous everywhere in the World.
