Andre Norton (born Alice Mary Norton the February 17th 1912 with Cleveland with the the United States and deceased the March 17th 2005 with Mufreesboro with the the United States of an heart attack), is an American woman writer of Fantasy and Science-fiction.

Biography

Alice Mary Norton was born in the Ohio, in a family related to the Littérature which devoted each week a little time for a visit to the public Librairie of the city. Before even learning how to read, she listens to her mother to tell him Conte S, in particular that of the Magicien of OZ. She starts to write at the school, under the control surface of her professor who is also editor newspaper of the school in which she will publish several news.

In 1930, at the end of its primary studies, it enters to the Case Western Reserve University to follow courses of Histoire (it is intended for a career of professor of history) during one year. Thereafter, it must find work with the local bookstore while following courses of the evening of journalism.

She writes its first novel Ralestone Luck in 1932 (it will be published only in 1938) and the second, The Prince Commands in 1934. In its first contacts in the edition, she is confronted, like many of her colleagues women, in a male world practically only . She then decides to take a Pseudonyme of man and changes officially her name into 1934 for Andre Alice Norton . At this period, she wishes to write for teenagers and thinks that its male name will enable him to improve its Marketing.

During the largest part of its eighteen years of work, it is assistant with the section child of the bookstore of Cleveland. In spite of its great knowledge of the literary world, it cannot claim at a better station of share its lack of diploma.

In 1941, it buys and manages a bookstore in the Maryland for one short period. Unfortunately, its company is quickly put in Faillite. Thereafter, she works for the bookstore of the Congrès, mainly for a project concerning the citizenship of the extraterrestrial ones. This project will be cancelled at the beginning of the Second world war.

In 1950, it finds a work of reader for Martin Greenberg which it will assume during eight years, before dedicating itself completely to the writing. In this period, it already published twenty-three novels and, in the twenty following years, writes of them practically seventy moreover, without counting news and some Anthologie S. Its most known series ( adventurers of the magic world - Witch World ), started like a simple news, is made up of more than thirty novels of which five only are translated into French. It also published certain novels under the names of Andrew North and Allen Weston .

In 1983, it receives off the Damon Knight Memorial Large Master Award of the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers America for reward of its work. During its long career, she collaborated and influenced many colleagues such as Julian May, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Mercedes Lackey or Sherwood Smith.

In November 1966, following medical problems, it moves in Florida where it lives until in 1997 for the Tennessee or it opens, in 1999 a research and place of retreat for writers which will close in 2004.

Its last complete novel, Three Hands for Scorpio was published in title postume, a few months after its death in 2005. With the advertisement of its death, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers off America officalisé the creation of a literary prize bearing its name, the Prix Andre Norton rewarding for the novels for young adults.

It also published under the name of Andrew North .
