André Miquel is an academic and French administrator, born on September 26th, 1929 with Mèze.
It is known to be interested in the Géographie Arab world like with the Thousand and One Nights. Its interest for the Arab world goes back to a voyage to the the Maghreb which it gains in reward of its success to the open Competition of geography in 1946, like with its discovery of the Coran in the translation of Claude-Etienne Savary.
Professor with the Collège de France, it was titular there pulpit of classical Arabic language and literature of 1976 with 1997. He was administrator of the National library of 1984 with 1987.
In 1988 a situation report on the college libraries in France is ordered to him. In 1989, the report is submitted to the Minister for state education, Lionel Jospin. He insists on the delay taken on the other European countries. This report/ratio is listened and the development plans of the universities make a place growing with documentation in the years 1990. The report/ratio is also for him the occasion to recommend the creation of a council “charged to envisage, prepare and follow the installation of the poles and communication networks, the costing, frequentations and results, the distribution of the corresponding appropriations and the establishment of the chart of the libraries”. Since 1989, the Superior council of the libraries is created and Andre Miquel is the first president.
