André Martinet (Saint-Alban-of-Villards the, April 12th 1908 - Châtenay-Malabry, July 16th 1999) is a linguist French.

Aggregate of English, it supports in 1937 its two theses of doctorate: consonant Gémination of expressive origin in the Germanic languages and the Phonology of the word in Danish .

Of 1938 with 1946, he is director of studies to the practical École of the high studies. It directs then International Auxiliary Language Association to New York (1946 - 1948), where it contributes to the development of the Interlingua. He teaches with the Université Columbia, where he is named director of the department of Linguistique (1947 - 1955) and becomes director of the review Word .

In 1955 it finds its station at the practical School of the high studies and occupies the pulpit of general Linguistique to the Sorbonne, then in Paris V. He is president of the European Company of linguistics (1966 - 1999), founds the Company of functional linguistics and the review Linguistics .

Influenced by the School of Prague, it founds the functionalist approach of the Syntaxe ( Langue and Fonction , 1962). He is the author of a score of important works in diachronic Linguistique ( Économie of the sound changes , 1955) and in general Linguistique. Its most known work, Éléments of general linguistics (1960) was translated in 17 Langue S and influenced a whole generation of linguists in France and in the world. He is also the author of: general Syntax (1985), Function and dynamics of the languages (1989). It left a intellectual autobiography: Memories of a linguist, food the languages (1993).

André Martinet has the first statement the Double articulation of the language, which makes conspicuous the human language (in opposition to the formal languages).
