Andre Lhote

André Lhote is a painter cubist, theorist of art and teacher French, born with Bordeaux the July 5th 1885 and died with Paris the January 25th 1962.

Biographical elements

After his studies with the Art schools of Bordeaux, André Lhote is initially Sculpteur then it launches out in painting. He is attached to the movement cubist in 1912, however he rejects what it of too much abstracted there in this form from painting and it will always seek to preserve a bond with the traditional painting, which it is by the subjects or the rigor of its compositions. He wants to register modernity, not in the rupture, but in the continuity of the tradition.

At the same time theorist and pedagog, in 1921 it bases its school street Odessa, on the heights of Montparnasse, where will study for example William Klein, Tamara de Lempicka, Bertrand Dorny, Marcelle Rivier, Henri Cartier-Bresson or Robert Wehrlin.

In the house which it has with Mirmande in Drome, it also organizes training courses of summer for its pupils. As from 1940 and during all the Occupation, many artists will find there refuge (Marcelle Rivier which will remain there, Alexandre Garbell, Pierre Palué…)

As of its beginnings, Lhote felt very in phase with the watchword of the “decorative whole” of the Art nouveau. It will keep until the end this taste for decoration. Thus it carries out the murals of the medical college of Bordeaux in 1957.

André Lhote is also the author of invaluable treaties of art (theoretical works) or books on art (critical works).
