Andre Latreille
André Latreille (19 April 1901 with Lyon, July 25th 1984 with the Neuville-on-Saone) was an intellectual and Historien French.
Biography
After studies with the College Amp then with the Faculté of the Lettres of Lyon, where his/her own father had been professor, it passes to 22 years the aggregation of History. He teaches initially with the college of Clermont-Ferrand, with the Thiers college of Marseilles, then with the College Amp of Lyon. After the publication of its Thesis of doctorate, it is named in 1937 University lecturer in Modern history with the Faculty of Arts of Poitiers.
Gaullist of the first hour, he is member of the Comité of release of the department of the Vienna from August in November 1944, then called by the General De Gaulle in November 1944 as director of the Worships to the Ministry for the Interior of the provisional government. He is in particular charged there to regulate the thorn-bush problem of the bishops having collaborated with the Régime of Vichy.
In August 1945, he is elected with the Chaire Modern history of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Lyon, where he will teach until his retirement in 1971, refusing, on several occasions, a post office with the Sorbonne. He is Doyen of the Faculty of 1956 to 1959, then Doyen honoraire.
For as much its community activity does not limit itself to the walls of its Faculty:
- Of October 1947 in February 1948, it gives a series this course inaugural to the Université Laval of Quebec, of which it helps to organize the Institute of History and Geography; it returns there on mission to 3 resumptions in 1950,1957 and 1960, at the request of the Vice-chancellor Parent.
- It teaches with the the Institute of Political Studies of Lyons, then with that of Grenoble.
- With the beginning of the year 1960, it creates the department of History of the University center of Saint-Etienne, embryo of future the Université Jean Monnet.
- It is called on several occasions for cycles of conferences to Beirut (Lebanon) and to Tananarive (Madagascar).
Contemporary of the “School of Annals”, it keeps as historian a line very personal, demanding, which makes him criticize all the facilities that the " are given as well; essay writers in evil of Histoire" that such theorist who describes " lifestyles and not of the vivants". From September 1945 in November 1972, at the request of his friend Hubert Beuve-Méry, founder of the newspaper Le Monde , it regularly holds in this newspaper a chronicle of historical criticism (more than 230 articles published), as appreciated amateurs of History as dreaded of the authors of works. In 1956, it founds the review the Books of history , and in 1962 the inter-University Regional center of religious history , which organized of 1953 to 1980 several international symposiums. Attached thereafter to the University Louis Light, but associating researchers of six Universités of the Rhone-Alps area, this research center bears today the name of Center Andre Latreille .
During all its career, he adds to his activities of teaching and publication an intense activity of lecturer, in France and abroad. The rigor and the clearness of its talks make a much in demand speaker of it. Its talent of speaker and its qualities of pedagog allured generations of students and amateurs of History.
Deeply catholic, active member as of his youth of the Social Chronic of France , and for this reason very committed in the company, it was one of the figures of the Catholic Center of the French Intellectuals (CCIF), of the Cercle Tocqueville , the University Paroisse (association of the Christians of Public education).
Convinced that “the secularity of the company is only the legal expression of the freedom of the act of faith”, it defended all its life the participation of the Christians in public education, and its analyzes referred in the debates relating to the private school (Law Barangé, Loi Debré), which was worth to him enemies in the two camps.
Andre Latreille, cultivated man, did not scorn the culture of his dear town of Lyon. The Almanac of the Friends of Puppet , the Littré of Grand' Coast and joke It Lyons wisdom were as familiar for him as works of Alexis de Tocqueville or Paul Claudel. This love of the soil related to a rare university competence in made a particularly estimated Lyons figure.
He was officer of the Légion of honor, commander about the Palmes academic, member of the Academy of Science, the humanities and arts of Lyon, corresponding member of the Institut of France (Academy of Science morals and political), commander of Orde of Saint-Gregoire-the-Large, and Honorary doctor of the Université Laval (Quebec).
He had married on September 13rd, 1924 Suzanne Ruplinger, of which he had 10 children between 1925 and 1944. He disappeared little before being able to celebrate their diamond wedding.
