In 1900, it met Maurice de Vlaminck in a train, with which it divided a studio, and started to paint its first landscapes. Autodidact, it attends much the museums and nourishes his esthetic reflection of a great number of readings (Zola, Nietzsche…). With Van Gogh that he discovers in 1901 and which will have a determining influence are added those of the Néo-impressionnistes and especially of Paul Cézanne. It joined Matisse with Collioure in 1905 and in this occasion the style defines which will make known it general public: bright colors, simplified drawing, clear composition. He is then regarded as one of the best representatives of the Fauvisme. In 1906 and 1907 it is upset by the Primitive arts and in close relation with Matisse, it continues reflection on the bonds between decoration and expression. It is interested in decorative arts: ceramics, low-reliefs out of wooden, sculpture, carry out large panels on the topic of the golden age, the dance, or the women with the bath. After 1906, it seems influenced by Gauguin, its colors become less sharp. But the following year he attends the Bateau-Lavoir, meets Picasso and Matisse with which he travels to Barcelona in 1910, Braque, Apollinaire, Van Dongen and max Jacob. He discovers and collects what one called the negro Art and he seems, a time, to follow the influence of Picasso but will not go beyond the pre-cubism and will end up breaking with him after 10 years of friendly relations. In 1907, it was tested with the sculpture on stone and moved with Montmartre to approach his/her friend Pablo Picasso and other known artists.
