Orphan at 4 years, it is raised by an uncle. At 18 years, it embarks itself on a vessel of trade for 18 months with St-Domingue. From return in France, it obtained service on the royal fleet. Then the Compagnie of the Indies takes it along America in China, while passing by the the Indies where it fights the English under the orders of the Baillif de Suffren. An island located at the western north of Vancouver (49°56 NR/124°48 O bears its name. Wounded in front of Sadras, it became lieutenant in 1791. After commands with Toulon and Rochefort. It is named lieutenant the 5/1/1786, captain in 1793, head of division in 1798, then Rear-admiral in 1802.
