Andre Bellavance

André Bellavance (born the June 6th 1964) is a Canadian politician ; he is currently Député with the House of Commons of Canada, representing the Québécois district of Richmond-Arthabaska since 2004 under the banner of the Québécois Bloc. Before being elected, he was the parliamentary assistant of Pierre Paquette.

Scandal of the flags

Bellavance early causes the controversy with the national scales in its mandate when he refuses to provide Canadian flags to the Canadian royal Légion with Richmond. Bellavance, Québécois souverainist, declares that it did not feel at ease to promote Canada by providing flags by its own office, and rather provides a number without expenses for the Department of the Canadian heritage.

Other deputies bloquists had provided Canadian flags on request to their principals in the past. A national brief scandal follows, of many people perceiving this refusal like an insult against the war veterans and the whole country. Several politicens quickly sends flags to the Legion; the Prime Minister Paul Martin sends a flag which had floated on the Lathe of Peace, and the chief of the opposition Stephen Harper delivered a dozen flags in person.

Gilles Duceppe, chief of the Québécois Block, announces little time after the whip Block would provide several flags to the Legion.
