Andre-Jean Festugière

Andre-Jean Festugière was born in 1898 and died in 1982; it is a Philosophe French, specialist in the Néo-platonisme, in particular in Proclus. One owes him the translation and the editions of the writings allotted to alleged the Hermes Trismégiste ( Hermes Three Times Large ).

Biography

Andre-Jean Festugière studied with the ENS (National university), with the French École of Rome (1920-1921) and with the French École of Athens. It enters the order of Dominican in 1923, before being ordered priest in 1930. He was director of studies to the practical École of the high studies of 1942 to 1968, and member of the Académie of the inscriptions and the humanities in 1958. Its research was devoted to the religious thought of the Pagan antiquity, in its contacts with incipient Christianity. It published and translated many texts of the Council of Ephèse and Concile of Chalcédoine, of the philosopher neoplatonician Proclus, as well as the Corpus Hermeticum allotted to alleged the Hermes Trismégiste. An obituary was written by Pierre Hadot in the Annuaire of the practical School of the High studies. Ve section , volume 92 (1983-1984), p. 31-35.
