Andre-François Boureau-Deslandes , (1690, Pondichéry - April 11th 1757, Paris), scientist and writer French

It comes to France only at the age 13 years. It entered to the service of the King in October 1708 as controller to Brest and was named Commissaire of the Navy in this port in 1716. Philosopher society man, with tendencies épicurienne S, disciple of Pétrone, Bernard Bovier de Fontenelle and of Saint-Evremond, it was treated by Voltaire " beautiful provincial spirit ". Receipt raises geometrician with the Academy of Science in February 1712, it takes part in many studies returned by Academies or Companies and collaborated in many erudite newspapers (he is member of the Academy of Science of Berlin). It was a long time Commissaire of the navy, after having been related to Nicolas Malebranche. He is the author of many books of Littérature, economy and Histoire. He is also the author of very many scientific and historical works on the Marine. He dies Célibataire in Paris in 1757.

  • the Apotheosis of the Beautiful-Sex . With London, at Van der Hoeck, 1712. It would be the first book of the author. According to, this volume was printed in Holland. It is a Salmigondis in prose, curious and often free.
  • Reflections on the great men who died while joking . The first edition goes back to 1712. Rochefort, Jacques the Black, 1714, 1755. This book will be put at the index in 1758. New edition, increased curious Epitaphs & other Parts which did not still appear . With Amsterdam, At the expense of the Company, 1758. One finds in the Epitaphs and other Parts , inter alia, the sonnet of the Little runt of Jean Hesnault. In addition to the jokes uttered by the men (and some women) whereas already the first notes of resound the Office of Darkness , this Badinage contains also impious reflections who announce the ideas of that Voltaire will name " the citizen and the philosopher ". The author is not hostile with the Suicide: " It is an injustice to treat as a criminal that which hastens its death. But are the laws always in conformity with the good sense? One kept with Marseilles, with the expenses of the public, a beverage for those which wanted to give up the life. Let us acknowledge it in good faith, the ideas of virtue and defect is rather chimerical: they suppose as much vanity than of ignorance, and they are there the two shelves of the human spirit ".

In these remarks of a Cosmopolitan , on varied subjects such as Weapons, Bravery, Corsairs, Slaves, Fables, Wars, Horoscopes, Imbécillité, Liberality, the Marriage. Voltaire etc, the author brings back the worms of an unknown poet. In its Foreword: " it would have Pu to give the explanation of several Allegoriques passages & Figurés (sixains) of the unknown Poet. ; but with l" imitation of those which compose of the Enigmas, it believed that it was to leave the pleasure to the savans of being them same the interpreters of what will appear mysterious in this kind of poesy (sic). "
  • Recueil of differens Treat Physique and Natural histories, suitable to improve these two sciences . Paris, Etienne Ganeau, 1736. Comprise 8 parts: 1). " Speech on the most advantageous manner to make experiments ". 2). " new and physical Observations on the manner of preserving the Grains ". 3). " First Letter with Mister of Saint-Beats. on the prompt vegetation of the Plants . 4). Second Letter with same on the Fishing of the Salmons ". 5). " Explanation on the Birds of Sea and Huitres". 6). " Explanation on the Worms which corrode the Vessels ". 7). " Letter of Mr. Deslandes of l" Academy of Science and Police chief of the Navy, on a Celtic Antiquity ". 8). " Observations on l" sea water and fresh water which one embarks in the vessels ". This work is extremely rare. George Fricx Brussels 1736. New re-examined edition, corrected and increased d" a " Treaty of the Wind s". This work contains six treaties: 1º advantageous Manner to make experiments and explanation of the two boards representing a Pump. 2º Manner of preserving the grains. 3º On the prompt Vegetation of the plants. 4º On Fishing with the Salmon. 5º Explanation on the birds of Sea and the Oysters. 6º Eclaircissement on the worms which corrode the wood of the vessels, on sea water and fresh water that one embarks on the vessels.
  • critical History of the Philosophy where one deals of his origin, his progress, & the various revolutions which arrived to him until our tems . By Mr. D ***. With Amsterdam, at François Changuion, 1737. History of the philosophy in ten books, which starts before the writing and which is finished with the XVIIe century.
  • Pigmalion, or the Animated Statue . With London, at Samuel Harding, 1741. This philosophical novel takes again on its account the Greek legend of the sculptor Pygmalion falling in love with the one from its own statues. Recent studies allot to this " rare work " , which was Condamné to fire as of 1742 because of its character Libertin, a significant place among the Littérature materialist of his time. Sources: Anne Deneys-Tunney, " the novel of the matter in Pigmalion " (in " To be materialist at the age of the Lights " , 1999), and Sebastien Drouin " Allégorisme and materialism in Pigmalion " , 2003. Contrary to the mention of the title, volume would have been printed with Paris or in Holland. Several other editions are published in 1742, 1743, 1744 and 1753. Extracts : While the Statue parloit still, Pigmalion entered abruptly, & the surprise was reciprocal. The Work & the Workman were observed length-tems with inattentive & curious glances. Lastly, the Statue breaking silence: Who who you are, says it to Pigmalion, because being unaware of me myself, I must even more ignore you, learn to me which is my fate. I étois nothing there am some instans, & I became something (pp. 61-62).
  • Test on the navy and the Trade. By Mr. D ****. With Historical & Critical Remarks of the Author. At François Changuion, 1743. " Place held by the marine among people of antiquity and in France since the beginning of monarchy. " The Navy supported by the royal authority must be used to protect the trade, with l" to extend, to give him each day again accroissemens, and (.) the trade must be used to introduce the abundance and any kind of richnesses into the kingdom, to make it as powerful as it can être." Critical of luxury, praise of manufactures: one of the most serious consequences of the revocation of the Édit of Nantes was the departure of workmen, it would be necessary to imitate Edouard IV which made come in England from the workmen spécialisés."   • Letter on the Luxury . With Frankfurt, at Joseph-Andre Vanebben, 1745. The author distinguishes between the luxury from genius which is useful, and luxates it manners, that of the table, clothes and pieces of furniture which is harmful.
