Anderlecht is one of the 19 common bilingual of Belgium located in the Région of Brussels-Capital.

In 2007, it counts 100  000 inhabitants (Anderlechtois) for a surface of 17,7 km ². It is located in the south-west of the agglomeration of Brussels and bordering at the communes on Brussels-city, Dilbeek, Forest, Molenbeek-Saint-Jean, Sint-Pieters-Leeuw and Saint-Gilles. It is famous mainly for its teams, of the Royal Sporting Club of Anderlecht, Football and Rugby (RSCA-Rugby) which is titrated Belgium.

History

The first traces of human occupation in the area of Anderlecht date from the age of the stone. But the first known appearance of the name of this village will appear only in 1047. At the time, four villages occupy in fact the territory of the current commune: Anderlecht, Cureghem, Aa and Neerpede.

As of the 15th century, Anderlecht constitutes one of the important villages in the area of Brussels. A collegial gothic script, Saint-Pierre-and-Handlebar, are high above the Romance crypt. In 1521, humanistic the Erasme spends a few months there, placing in the house of the local canons.

November 13rd, 1791, Dumouriez beat the Austrians there.

The 19th century will have then to be waited so that the commune urbanizes progressively extension of the agglomeration of Brussels: along the roadway of Mons, a series of industrial and working districts join initially the center of Anderlecht by Cureghem, then extend beyond, with in particular the establishment, at the beginning of the XXe century, working city of the Wheel.

Cultural places

  • Museum of China, museum which gathers many documents and objects that the congregation of Scheut brought back of their action to China, whose one Bouddha bronzes some dating from XVe century, and of very many portraits of missionaries. This museum is established in the current convent and recalls the aspects of the cultural life, artistic of old China.

Luizenmolen

Anderlecht has a windmill, Luizenmolen, located street of the butterflies. It is a modern reconstitution (1999) of a mill located at this place in the past.
