Andastes

The Andastes (in English “Susquehannock”, Dutch and Swedish “Minquas”) are Amerindian people having lived with the accesses of the river Susquehanna and its tributary rivers in current Virginia like with the Maryland and the Delaware. This nation spoke a dialect iroquoïen but had refused the invitation made by the latter join the Confederation.

They developed in first half of the 17th century a lucrative trade with the colonists of Virginia and more particularly with the colony of the News-Sweden until in 1655 when the latter was yielded to the United Provinces Dutchwomen. It is possible that they are the persons in charge of the first attacks in September 1655 directed against the Dutch establishments during the Guerre of Fishing.
