Geography

Located at the south-west of the department on the Corrèze, Brive-the-Strapping woman - Gallic Briva which means bridge; the bridge out of wooden spanned Corrèze, at the end of the Middle Ages, a bridge of stone with 13 arches crossed the marshes (guierles) closer to the city - is the main city, more populated much than the Préfecture Tulle. Brive-the-strapping woman is served by A20 (connecting Paris with Toulouse), and recently by A89 (connecting Bordeaux to Clermont-Ferrand).

History

Brive was initially a point of crossing of Corrèze, as its Gallic toponym Briva attests it. The primitive ford was then replaced by a Roman bridge (bridge of Bouy) designed for an active route of Lyon to Bordeaux by the valley of the Corrèze. This route crossed a North-South axis which connected Poitiers to Cahors. A modest village emerged, attested by the vestiges of workshops of very active potters. The city was christianized at the 5th century by Martin says the Spaniard, on the tomb of which Rorice 1st, bishop of Limoges, built a basilica. At the 6th century, it was the theater of a revolt of notable of Aquitaine which, refusing to fall under the cut from the king from Austrasie, met in Brive and related to the bulwark Gondovald, bastard of Clotaire, itself wire of Clovis. But this “king de Brive” was assassinated in 584. The basilica was set fire to and the the Limousin, attached to Austrasie. Holy Ironwood, bishop of Limoges, made rebuild the basilica and was based on a community of canons for the diffusion of the Évangile. About the year millet, Brive had become a canonic borough equipped with many places of worship.

At the 11th century, Brive, located at the junction of the Viscounts of Limoges, Comborn and Turenne, had as a lord the bishop of Limoges. The city which extended on three hectares, was protected by an enclosure bored from four doors. As from the 12th century, suburbs out of the walls developed, on both sides of the access roads. But the city did not comprise a castle because its protection was ensured by the lords of Malemort and the Viscounts of Turenne. This protection proved however heavy; the middle-class men, pulled by the wave of general urban emancipation, obtained the consulate, that Louis VIII confirmed in 1225. The canons adopted the rule of Saint-Augustin and they rebuilt the collegial Saint Martin's day. In 1341, to respect the order of the king, the four consuls of Brive undertook the construction of a large enclosure which quintupled enclosed space; the extent of work was worth in the city the nickname of “strapping woman”. By the Treated of Brétigny, Brive, which belongs to Aquitaine, became English and remained it until the rupture of the treaty and the resumption of the war, nine years afterwards. Then begin a period of undulation with a hesitant and late fastening with king de France. Again attached to England in 1373, after the treason of a consul, the city was finally reconquered the following year by the king of France, which abolishes a time consulate and franknesses. Charles V finishes by him granting its grace, and the city remained from now on faithful to the crown. In 1463, Louis XI was accommodated in the jubilation. Remained catholic within an area acquired with the Reform, Brive was ransacked by the troops of Turenne in 1577. To reward the city for his fidelity, the king made the seat of a présidial of it.

With, the city knew a great prosperity, to which Briviste Guillaume Dubois contributed, tutor of Philippe of Orleans, then Prime Minister. With his brother, who had become tall voyer, it built the Neuf bridge (the current Cardinal bridge) and of new private mansions, arranged boulevards and the suburbs, cleanses the marshes of Guierle, restored the collegial one and destroyed the ramparts. Nevertheless, in spite of this rise, the city, very little industrialized, did not count with the day before a Révolution that only one fabric factory, which occupied some two hundred workmen. Modeste chief town of district at the beginning of the 19th century, Brive developed starting from 1860, thanks to the arrival of the Railroad. Its site, preferred with that of Tulle for topographic and economic reasons, became the railway center of a star with six branches. The train involved the specialization of the basin of Brive in the vegetable and fruit-bearing production. This agricultural rise induced the creation of other establishments: canning facilities, jam factories, factories of liquors and, for conditioning, basket makings, paper mills and factories of wood. Regional capital of Resistance as a seat of the main movements (Armed secret and Movements plain with Resistance) and networks of information (Special Operations Executive, Alliance…), Brive-the-Strapping woman is the first city of France occupied to release itself by her own means on August 15th 1944.
