Anastase, of modest origin, is a senior official of the Empire under the reign of Zénon since it occupies the station of Silentiaire. Distinguished by the empress ARIANE, widow of her predecessor, it marries it and reaches thus the imperial throne in 491.

Outside, it gains many successes against the Perses and is combined, more formally than really with Clovis I {{er}}, the king of the Francs in order to take with reverse the Ostrogoths.

It reorganized finances (suppression of the Chrysargyron into 498) and strengthened Constantinople. Its reign was crossed revolts and civil wars. Monophysite, it persecuted the orthodoxe and broke with Rome. He dies in eighty eight years, struck by the lightning.
