Hollywood (: wood of houx) is the name given to the north-western part of the area of Los Angeles (California, with the the United States). Hollywood gave its name to a district of Los Angeles, and extends on the cities close to West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Burbank. Its population is estimated at approximately 300  000 inhabitants.

The district is famous for its studios of Cinéma, the head offices of the great groups of cinematography and to be the principal place of residence of many stars. In 1911, Nestor Studios is the first movie studio to be settled in Hollywood.

The word Hollywood often refers to the American Cinema industry taken as a whole, taking into account the concentration which made the fortune of the megalopolis here. This association is however reducing for a American Cinéma which also asserts realizers of the east coast, who are not affiliated with this industry of the images.

History

In the Years 1880, Henderson Wilcox, originating in the Kansas, which made fortune in the Immobilier although having lost the use of its legs because of the Typhoid fever, and his wife Daeida, decide to move since Topeka until Los Angeles. In 1886, Wilcox buys 0,6 km ² ground in the countryside in the west of the city, on the buttresses of the Passe of Cahuenga. It is Daeida Wilcox which chooses the name of the property, “Hollywood”, while making reference to colony of immigrants German named Hollywood and located in Ohio, it was informed while discussing with a woman which lives there, at the time of a voyage by train towards the east. Of the word it liking the sonority, it calls the Ranch thus.

Harvey Wilcox creates little time after a chart of the city, which it supplements with the authorities of the county the 1e February 1887: it is the first time that the name of Hollywood appears officially. With his wife like adviser, it traces the main street, which it calls Prospect Which occurred (today Hollywood Boulevard), bordering it like the other avenues of toyon S. Then it starts to sell the grounds skirting the avenue by batches. Daeida raises funds to build two churches, a school and a library. They import some Houx English to try to give a reason in the name of the city, but the bushes are not acclimatized and this project is abandoned.

In 1900, Hollywood has a post office, its own newspaper, a hotel and two markets, serving a population of approximately 500 people. Los Angeles, which comprises 100.000 inhabitants at that time, is located at 11 km in the east of Hollywood, and the two cities are separated by cultures from citrus fruits. A single tram line on the basis of Prospect Which occurred joined Los Angeles, but the service is inconstant and the voyage hard two hours. The situation is improved thereafter with the reconversion of a hangar in stable.

It is in 1902 that celebrates it Hollywood Hotel opens, on the west coast of Highland Avenue and opposite Prospective customer Which occurred. This road, hitherto salts and not-paved, is made suitable for motor vehicles thereafter. The following year, the city becomes a municipality. In 1904 a new line of tram is built, which radically decreases the time of voyage until Los Angeles. Its name, The Hollywood Boulevard , will be one of the reasons of the renaming of Prospective customer Which occurred. The other reason is the annexation from the city in Los Angeles. Indeed, in 1910, the advisers vote his annexation in Los Angeles, especially with an aim of benefitting from the effective system of water provision from the city. This one indeed has just completed the Aqueduc of Los Angeles. Another reason of this vote is the access to the sewerage system of Los Angeles. Thus, through this annexation, Prospect Which occurred becomes Hollywood Boulevard, which involves the modification of all the numbers of streets of the new district. For example, 100 Prospective customer Which occurred, on Vermont Avenue, becomes 6400 Hollywood Boulevard, and 100 Cahuenga Boulevard, on Hollywood Boulevard, becomes 1700 Cahuenga Boulevard.
