Amphoe

A amphoe (sometimes also amphur in Thai: อำเภอ) is the administrative subdivision of the second level of the Thailand. Usually translated like district, the amphoe composes the provinces. The amphoe are still subdivided in tambon. Thailand has 796 minor districts and 81 districts ( King Amphoe , กิ่งอำเภอ). The 50 districts of Bangkok are called the khet (เขต), but even in the official documents they are sometimes indicated like amphoe. The number of amphoe in a province differs, only of 3 in the smallest provinces to the 50 urban districts of Bangkok. Moreover, the sizes and the population of the amphoe differs, the smallest population is in King Amphoe KB Kut (province of Trat) with Juste 2042 citizens, whereas Amphoe Mueang Samut Prakan (province of Samut Prakan) has 435,122 citizens. The khet of Bangkok are smallest, Khet Samphanthawong is smallest with 1.4 km ² only, while the amphoe of the little populated areas of the mountains are sometimes larger than some provinces, Amphoe Umphang (province of Tak) with 4325.4 km ² is largest.
