Amphitheater of Avenches

The Amphithéâtre of Avenches was built in the Roman city of Aventicum in Germanie higher (today with Avenches in Suisse) .

It was set up at the beginning of the IIe century, about the year 130 a. J. - C.

First state

Built out of yellow limestone hardcore small apparatus, this Amphithéâtre had a sizeable size (99 meters of main roads) and 9.000 spectators, out of 24 steps, could attend the Circus games.

Second state

It was increases under the reign of Marc-Aurèle and Lucius Verus, about the year 165 a. J. - C. It was covered with coating decorated with false apparatus, its capacity reached 14.000 place thanks to 12 additional steps, and its main roads measured 105 meters.

Disaffection

The Amphithéâtre is used as career starting from the IVe century, and it was the base of certain constructions of the Moyen-âge.

Current employment

This place is used for many demonstrations of which, in particular, a festival of annual summer taking place in August called Rock Oz' Arènes.
