Amphictyonie
By amphictyonie , one indicates an association or religious confederation of Greek communities which lived in the vicinity of a sanctuary, for which they had also the responsibility.
The word comes from the Greek word Ἀμφικτύονες / Amphiktyones , literally “those which are close”. According to the Greek Mythology, the term came rather from Amphictyon, wire of Deucalion and Pyrrha, founder of the amphictyonie of Delphes, and brother of Hellen, ancestor éponyme of the Greeks.
The purpose of these associations were to take care of the celebration of the festivals and D to prevent any hostility. Each Neighboring state of the temple sent its deputies to it. The most famous amphictyonies were those of Argos, close to the temple of Héra, of the Thermopyles, close to the temple of Cérès, and Delphes, close to the famous oracle of Apollon. In the continuation, these two last merged and formed the Conseil of Amphictyons.
The amphictyonie of Delphes
Most important amphictyonie was initially established with Thermopyles, whose sanctuary was the temple of Déméter. Then the amphictyonie moved with Delphes, with the temple of Apollon in which oracle was.
Many the principal people of Greece, whose Thessalie NS, Doriens and Ionie NS, were members.
The assembly of this amphictyonie met twice a year, alternatively in Delphes and Thermopyles. She managed the sanctuary of Apollo and supervised the Jeux Pythiques; she also had a great political importance.
