Ampelography

The ampelography is the discipline studying the Vigne and more particularly its Espèce S and variety S, the Cépage S.

The term is formed on the Greek ampelos ( ἄμπελος ), the vine.

Its main object is the morphological description of type of vines by the herbaceous Bourgeonnement S (apex), branches, the Feuille S adults, the Grappe S, the vine shoots, etc to be able to identify them, the OIV (International organization of the vine and the wine) raised 88 descriptors on these various bodies. The same type of vines are indeed often known locally under different names and it is important to recognize all the synonyms. One counts today in the world approximately 5000 cultivated type of vines which, with the translations, can carry not less 40  000 names.

The " temple" of Ampélographie world is located at the Field of Vassal in Herault where are studied and characterized more than 5000 type of vines.
