Ampelmännchen
The Ampelmännchen (German word meaning “small catches of fire ( of indication )”) are the characters symbolic systems being on the luminous traffic lights intended for the Piéton S in ex- East Germany.
They were created in 1961 by Karl Peglau and were to be removed in 2004, but following protests, it was decided to preserve them, because they represented for much one of the last if not the only trace of their old East-German identity disappeared in the reunification (see also Ostalgie). Even the Western part of Berlin adopts it because they are easier to distinguish.
In 2004, their during female, the Ampelmädchen (young girl of traffic light), appeared with Zwickau. One can now also see them with Dresden.
There exist also arranged versions showing e.g. a man carrying an umbrella, result of a hoax (visible on de.WIKI by clicking on the German version " Deutsch")
