Amorgen

In the Irish Celtic Mythology, two distinct characters bear the name Amorgen ( Amairgin , Amairgen , Amergin ):

Amorgen Glungel

First is Amorgen Mac Mile (i.e. wire of Mile Espàine) and more known under the name of Glungel (with the white knees). It is the paramount “file” of the Milesiens (the first colonists Gaels in Ireland), as well as a bards and than a Juge, according to the Lebor Gabála Érenn ( Livre of the Conquests of Ireland ).

This colony, taken along by eight wire of Mile (itself having already died), unloaded in Ireland, coming from Spain to avenge death for Ith. This one, come to explore the island, had been treacherously assassinated by the three kings of the Tuatha Dé Danann: Mac Cuill, Mac Cecht and Mac Gréine. The three queens Banba, Ériu and Fódla, (three sisters, wives of the three kings) authorized, in return, Amorgen and its people to be accosted. Each one of it required of the druid to give his name to the island. It is that of Érui which was chosen, it is at the origin of Érin, the names of the two sisters is more frequently used in a poetic way.

However, Milesiens had to take the island during a formidable fight against the three kings, their druids and their warriors. Amorgen played the part of judge and was impartial towards each camp by enacting the rules of the combat. Milesiens agreed to leave the island and to cut off in the ocean, behind the ninth wave, a magic border. With a certain signal, they approached the shore, but the druids of the Die Danann raised a magic storm which prevented them from reaching the ground. However, Amorgen called upon the Spirit of Ireland during what one names the Song of Amorgen , this one could divide the storm and make it possible the ships to accost without damage. There were many losses on both sides, but Milesiens carried it. The three kings of Tuatha Dé Danann were killed in singular combat by three surviving wire: Fine Eber, Eremon and the Amorgen druid. Amorgen separated the country between his/her two brothers, Eber taking the Southern part of Ireland, Eremon, North. According to the Lebor Gabála Érenn , it is the first human occupation of the island.

Armogen Mac Eccit

Second Amorgen is the druid-poet (see Barde) Conchobar Mac Nessa, it is also a frightening warrior, in the “Cycle of Ulster”.

He is the son of Eccet Salach, he grows until the fourteen years age without speaking nor to wash itself. One day, Aithirne Ailgesach, large the Druide of Ulster sends its servant to Eccet to buy an axe. Amorgen launches out then in a terrible poetic incantation, the servant is turned over from there precipitately near its Master to give an account of to him what he heard. Aithirne decides to remove the child who could one being day a threat, but his/her father replaces it by a clay double, truer than natural. Aithirne comes to seek its new axe and tests it of a blow on Amorgen, which he thinks of having killed. Ulates (inhabitants of Ulster) besiege the fatal druid in his residence in order to obtain a compensation for Eccet. Amorgen becomes his/her adoptive son, it follows the teaching of the scientist and will become the large druid of Ulster.

Amorgen is the father of Cai Cainbrethach. His wife is Findchoem, girl of the druid Cathbad and Ness, and sister of Conchobar (he is thus the son-in-law of the king). Its name means “birth of the song”.
