Ammonios Saccas

Ammonios Saccas (3rd century) was a Greek philosopher of Alexandria, often considered as the founder of the school neoplatonician.

Biography

Of modest origin, it seems to have earned its living like portefaix; as its nickname of “Carrier-of-bags indicates it” ( Sakkas , for sakkoforos ). The details of its life are unknown. After one long period of studies and meditation, Ammonios opened a school of philosophy in Alexandria. Its principal pupils were Herennius, both Origène, Longin and Plotin. As he personally did not write anything, and, with the assistance of its pupils, kept its secret lesson, with the manner of the pythagoricians, his philosophy must primarily be deduced from the writings of Plotin. As Zeller the propose, however, there are reasons to believe that its doctrines were closer to that of Platonic than of that of Plotin. Hiérocles, writing at the 5th century, affirms that its fundamental doctrines were an eclecticism or syncretism, derived from a critical study of Plato and Aristote. Its admirors affirm that it had been able to reconcile the quarrels of the two universities of thought. Its death variablement was variablement given between 240 and 245, at a advanced age.

The details of the life of the philosopher Ammonios Saccas are if not very clear that it would frequently have been confused with a Christian philosopher of the same name. This one, affirms Eusèbe de Césarée ( Histoire of the Church , VI.19), followed by Jerome de Stridon, would have been born as a Christian, remained devoted with the Christianisme throughout its life, and even produced two works called the Harmony of Brace and Jesus and a Diatessaron or Harmonie of the Four Gospels . Porphyry of Tyr, quoted by Eusèbe de Césarée, however, affirms that it converts tardily in its life and no writing left behind him. It seems, at all events, that Eusebius referred, in its writings, with a Christian philosopher. Nevertheless, certain authors and historians tend to present the idea that Ammonios the neo-platonist philosopher would have tried to carry out a synthesis of its study of Plato and Aristote and doctrines Eastern such as Christianity.
