Amitav Ghosh (born in 1956) is a writer and critical literary Indian of expression English E.
Biography
Ghosh was born with Calcutta, with the Bengal. He studied in Doon School (where he was codisciple of his elder Vikram Seth), with the college St Stephen' S of Delhi, with the Université of Delhi and the Université of Oxford, where he obtained a Ph.D. in Social anthropology. Apparently, Ghosh on the occasion to show some of its poems with Seth, which suggested to him being confined with prose.Ghosh lives with New York with his wife Deborah Baker, biographer and editor in Little, Brown and Company. They have two children, Lila and Nayan. In 1999, Ghosh was named professor of Littérature compared with the Queens College (Université of the Town of New York). He was also professor invited of English the department of the Université of Harvard as from 2005. He became recently owner with Goa and regularly turns over to India. He works on a Trilogie which should be published at Penguin Books India.
Its last work of fiction, The Hungry Tide ( Country of the tides ), was published in April 2004. The Shadow Lines , published in 1990, was worth to him the Prix Sahitya Akademi, the Indian literary reward most prestigious. The Calcutta Chromosome ( the Chromosome of Calcutta , 1995) accepted the Prix Arthur C. Clarke 1997. The novels of Gosh are characterized by strong topics which are often related to the Postcolonialisme, but they are difficult to categorize. Its subjects are personal and single; part of its charm is due to its capacity to interlace some " nostalgia indienne" with more serious topics.
These novels are translated in many languages. The circle off reason ( Fires of Bengal ) received the Prix Médicis foreign in 1990.
Ghosh also wrote 4 not-fictional works: In Ancient year Land (1992), Dance hall in Cambodia, Broad In Burma (1998), Countdown ( Countdown 1999, on the nuclear policy of India), and The Imam and the Indian (2002, a whole of tests on various topics such as the Fundamentalism, history of the novel, Egyptian culture and the Literature). It received the Médaille Padma Shri Indian government in 2007.
