American Society off Ichthyologists and Herpetologists
The American Society off Ichthyologists and Herpetologists (American company of the ichtyologists and the herpetologists ( ASIH ) is an international organization reserved for the scientific study of the Ichtyologie (the study of the Poisson S) and Herpétologie (the study of the Reptile S and Amphibiens). The original intention of this Company is to contribute to improve knowledge on these organizations, to diffuse its knowledge thanks to publications, conferences and other methods, and to encourage and support the young scientists who wish to devote themselves to these disciplines. The objectives of American Society off Ichthyologists and Herpetologists is to contribute to the comprehension and the protection of natural diversity and to contribute to the use of the natural resources for the good being of humanity.
HistoryThe December 27th 1913, John Treadwell Nichols (1883-1958) publishes the first number of Copeia , a scientific publication dedicated to knowledge on the Poisson S, Reptile S and Amphibien S. Nichols names this publication Copeia in homage to Edward Drinker Cope (1840-1897), an important American ichtyologist of the 19th century. The first number of Copeia counted four pages and five articles.
With an aim of widening the diffusion of Copeia to improve the communication among the ichtyologists and the herpetologists, Nichols meets Henry Weed Fowler (1878-1965) and Dwight Franklin with New York City. The three men found then American Society off Ichthyologists and Herpetologists; nevertheless, the creation of this company is often only allotted to Nichols.
In 1923, this company counts approximately fifty members and Copeia reaches 120 pages. A leading team is established and with the responsibility of ensure the growth of the newspaper which becomes quarterly. Today, the company counts more than 2400 members, and Copeia account 1 200 pages and is available in a thousand of library throughout the world.
