History

The creation of ABC

In the Years 1930, the radio with the the United States was dominated by only some companies, among those one can name Mutual Broadcasting, Columbia Broadcasting and National Broadcasting Company (or NBC then property of Radio Corporation off America RCA).

RCA had two networks which managed each different radio station. The two networks were called NBC Blue and NBC Red .

In 1940, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) publishes a report on the diffusion of radio operator programs in network. The report/ratio recommends that RCA separates from the one of its two networks: NBC Red or NBC Blue. NBC Red is then the principal network of radio to the the United States and, according to the FCC, RCA uses NBC Blue then to eliminate any inclination from competition. Not having any capacity on the networks themselves, the FCC founds that a radio station “cannot be seen delivering license if it is affiliated with a network held by a company publishing several networks.”

Its calls having been rejected, RCA decides to separate from NBC Blue and with this intention gives a mandate to Mark Woods. In 1943, NBC Red and NBC Blue became two distinct companies being distributed their goods. Noble Edward, owner of the Lifesaver confectioneries and New Yorkean radio station WMCA, proposes 8 million dollars for the network. The transaction implying the repurchase by Noble of three stations with RCA, and the resale of stations that Noble had previously, it must be approved by the FCC. The commission, after having obtained the Noble one, the president of the new business, and Woods, its director, which they are committed off not selling of time of antenna with the very powerful trade union American Federation Labor, authorizes the transaction the October 12th 1943.

Blue Network Company Inc . is then repurchased by American Broadcasting System Inc. The network is renamed American Broadcasting Company, ABC, and its parent company American Broadcasting Companies Inc…. And the network will end up selling time of antenna with the trade unions.

The years 1950: Fusion with Paramount

At the beginning of the era of television, ABC is found in position of outsider and its cover is quite less than that of its two competitor networks. At the beginning of the Years 1950, the network of cinemas United Paramount Theaters, or UPT, repurchases ABC. In measurement or the movie studio Paramount is already shareholder of the television network Dumont, the FCC then carries out a series of hearings to make sure that Paramount was well disengaged of United Paramount Theaters and enfreint thus not anti-monopoly acts.

In 1954, ABC n the other hand finances part of the project of Disneyland of the production by Disney of a television program. The contribution was of 500.000$ in investment and a guarantee of 4,5 additional in loans, is a third of the budget of the park.

The September 8th 2007, Disney decided arréter the chain in October because of an impossibility for the chain of awaiting a suitable share of audience

The logo of ABC

Before its first retransmissions color, the logo ABC was a tiny “ABC” in the center of large “also has” him into tiny. This logo was called " ABC Circle A".

It was modified with the autumn 1962 under the drawing of Paul Rand when ABC started to use the ultramodern logo now called " ABC Circle" with “ABC” into tiny in a black circle. The graphic aspect used for this famous logo is a simple geometrical drawing inspired of the school Bauhaus of the Années 1920. Its simplicity makes it easier to redraw and duplicate, thing which made it possible ABC to take an advantage of many times during the years (mainly before the appearance of the computer). It does not correspond to any precise bill of character; however, several geometrical font faces with base approach some (of which Before Garde and Horatio).
At one time the logo was included in a Blason surmounted American eagle.
