American Astronomical Society
LAmerican Astronomical Society (AAS) is a company gathering of the Astronome S with the the United States whose seat is located at Washington. The goal of the AAS is the promotion of the Astronomie and of the associated scientific branches, its 6.500 members thus include/understand astronomers but also geologists, physicists, mathematicians etc
The AAS is founded in 1899 by George Ellery Hale. The charter of the group is written by Hale, George Comstock, Edward Morley, Simon Newcomb and Edward Charles Pickering. These five men plus four others train the first executive council of the AAS which counts 114 members then. The name of the company was not decided before 1915, previously it is called off Astronomical and Astrophysical Society America .
The AAS counts 6.500 members nowadays and is made up of five divisions, it distributes several prices of which most known are:
- the Price Newton Lacy Pierce in astronomy,
- the Price Helen B. Warner for astronomy,
- the Price Beatrice Mr. Tinsley,
- the Price George Van Biesbroeck,
- the Joseph Weber Award for Astronomical Instrumentation ,
- the Price Dannie Heineman for astrophysics (price decreed jointly with the American Institute off Physics ),
- the Price Harold Clayton Urey (decreed by the division of Planetology of the AAS),
- the Price of astronomy Annie J. Canon (decreed jointly with the American Association off University Women ),
- the Gerald P. Kuiper Prize in Planetary Science .
The AAS manages also a little program of allowance of studies and a programme of travel allowance of which any astronomer working with the the United States can profit.
Divisions
The field of astronomy being very diversified, five divisions are founded in the Années 1960 - 70, these divisions holds of the separate conferences:
-
the division of planetology ( Division for Planetary Science , DPS, 1968) deals of Planétologie and the exploration of the Solar system.
- the dynamic division of astronomy ( Division for Dynamical Astronomy , DDA, 1969) explores the Dynamique astronomical systems (orbits, evolution and history) since the Solar system until the Superamas of Galaxie S on a cosmological scale .
- the Astrophysical division of of high energies ( High Energy Astrophysics Division , HEAD, 1969), Physical of the particles, Quantum, relativity and Gravitation.
- the division of History of astronomy ( Historical Astronomy Division , HAD, 1969), history of astronomy and research using of the historical data to solve current problems in astronomy.
- the division of physique of the Sun ( Solar Physics Division , SPD, 1980), research on the Sun and its interactions with the Solar system and the Ground.
