Ambrons
The tribe of the Ambrons (Latin: Ambrones ) briefly appears at the 2nd century, whereas they migrate at the same time as the Cimbres and the Teutons in what one will call the Guerre of Cimbres. They disappear from the chronicles after being overcome with their fellow travellers in -102. They were estimated at 30.000 among a migratory wave from 100.000 to 300.000 people.
They could be originating in the Scandinavian coasts of Europe, the Friesian islands or the Jutland. In this case, they would have been the neighbors of Cimbres and Teutons. Like they, they could have fled the area because of a famine. One can also suppose them Helvètes. If their origin is unknown, they are supposed Celtes like Cimbres, contrary to Germanic Teutons of origin, and this for two primary reasons.
- the name of their tribe is relatively close to that many other Celtic tribes (Ambr…)
- Ambrones follow the Celtic habit which consists in shouting the name of their tribe in the battle.
