Ambroise Vollard

Wire of notary born with Saint-Denis of the Meeting on July 3rd 1866 and died in Versailles on July 22nd 1939, Ambroise Vollard was a large merchant of table X and Galeriste French. He was an avant-gardist as regards modern art, and tied himself with the great painters of the end of the 19th century and the débutdu 20th century. Impassioned of the Father Ubu de Jarry, it was fascinated by the literature.

Biography

The young Ambroise Vollard leaves his native island to continue studies with Montpellier but it is in the capital that it will make finally his Droit. It develops to with it a passion for the Peinture which leads it to open its Galerie art as of 1890. It opens its first Parisian gallery in 1893.

It will expose thereafter many major artists like Paul Gauguin or Henri Matisse, this last in 1904. He will attend many others of it, in particular Paul Cézanne or Auguste Renoir, which will paint its Portrait, as well as the Nabis. Moreover, in 1898, Pierre Bonnard, Ker-Xavier Roussel and Edouard Vuillard carry out with his request of the Lithographie S color. And it is at his place that takes place in June 1901 the first Exposition of works of Pablo Picasso, Spanish painter who also painted his portrait.

He becomes the friend of Maurice de Vlaminck and contributes enormously to his recognition. Later, it also meets Alfred Jarry. With its contact, he is discovered writer and makes in particular several Ubu during the First World War of which its Ubu Colonial . He launches out as of 1889 in the edition and publishes many Poète S in collections illustrated per as many large Masters. He tries to launch in 1895 a review, the modern Print , which will know one number.

He is named officer of the Légion of honor in 1911.

In 1914, the war obliges it to close its Parisian gallery, transferring its tables, by safety, in the area of Saumur. It reopens only in 1919 after the end of the hostilities. It is however expelled by it because of the boring of the Boulevard Haussmann in 1924, obliging it to move in VIIe district.

The August 23rd 1939, Réunionnais announces the death of Ambroise Vollard in a car accident.

Posterity

Ambroise Vollard left his name with a Théâtre of Saint-Denis of the Meeting and to his troop like with a college of Saint-Pierre of the Meeting. Part of its collection is preserved in the Musée Leon Dierx of Saint-Denis.
