François-Alexandre Hatier was born, on July 9th, 1856, in Ambonville (Haute-Marne). Publisher created in 1880 per Alexandre Hatier, the Hatier Bookstore starts by publishing prize-books, then is made known since 1886 by publishing its first school works for the elementary school, of the books of natural science or rather of " lessons of choses" : Brémant. Very quickly, these first titles are a great success.• In 1900, Alexandre Hatier repurchases the funds Pigoreau, bookseller in whom it had, as of the fourteen years age, begun its training, and it publishes first Bescherelle.
• In 1910, appear the History of the French literature of Desgranges, conceived for the classes of letters; followed soon by the famous Traditional ones for all, collection devoted to works, annotated and with accompanying notes, of the literature French and foreign, and used by several generations of schoolboys and students.
• In 1912, the repurchase of the Juven Editions facilitates the introduction of Hatier into higher education. From 1920 the first Courses of Greek and Latin of Charles Georgin appear, who cut a beautiful market share in secondary education during long decades.
• In 1930, the first titles of the collections of history, geography and natural science are published. As many secure incomes which, in one half-century, gradually will place the house among the three large ones of the edition " classique".
The disappearance of Alexandre Hatier, continuity will be ensured by a family direction which will continue the activity of origin. Indeed, his/her daughter, White, then the grandsons of the founders, Jean and Michel Fuller, will deal with the destinies of the company. This one continues its progression after the Second world war, diversifying its production in all the matters of primary and secondary education. One speaks already about a know-how Hatier, mixture carefully proportioned of respect of the traditions and teaching innovation good moderated, always supplied with a care very attentive carried with the manufacture of the books and their pictorial display.
From the years 1970, the Hatier Editions develop actively in the field of the extra-curricular one by taking a place of number 1 which, to date, is still not contradicted. Its Bescherelle collections, for the training of the conjugation, or Profile, whose volumes present various aspects of a literary work, a cultural topic or a subject of topicality, always refer in their respective fields.
Bernard Foulon, postpones grandson of Alexandre Hatier, will take the direction of the Editions in 1990. Since, a continual diversification of the production allowed a consolidation of the position of the Hatier Editions in the field of the educational research, training and education.
In 1996, the Hatier Editions, subsidiary of the Group Alexandre Hatier, were acquired by the Hachette Livre Group.
The Group Alexandre Hatier is currently directed by Nathalie Jouven, Managing director.
