Amboise

Historical city of Indre-et-Loire, Amboise is located on the edges of the the Loire.

Its inhabitants is called Amboisiens, Amboisiennes or Ambaciens, Ambaciennes.

Geography

The city is located mainly on southern bank of the the Loire at a place where it separates transitorily in two arms, forming a island (Grande-Ile or Island-in Or), and making thus easier its crossing. It is overhung of a plate, sits of sound Château.

History

  • a human presence was objectified as of first century BC. Its Latin name is “Ambacia” .
  • Clovis and the Visigoths signed there a peace treaty in 503.
  • Jeanne d' Arc passed in 1429 there before joining Orleans.

Its history merges then with that of sound castle. Louis d' Amboise having been compromised in a plot against Georges of Trémoille, Favorite of Charles VII, the seigniory of Amboise is confiscated in 1434 and is joined together with the crown. The painter, engineer and Italian architect Léonard de Vinci spent there the last years of its life (it resided at the manor of Close-Lucé).

The edict of Amboise of March 19th 1563 was returned there, which granted to the Calviniste S the freedom of conscience.

Because of its royal castle, very many celebrities lived in Amboise, most famous being undoubtedly Léonard de Vinci, which finishes its days in its house of the Clos Lucé.

  • In 1946, Amboise annexed the commune of Saint-Denis-Out;

  • Amboise is the heart of the second agglomeration of Indre-et-Loire in term of population (16 037 inhabitants in 1999), after that of Tours.
