Ambleteuse

Ambleteuse is a common French, located in the department of the Pas-de-Calais and the area Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

Geography

History

History of Ambleteuse, at the origin simple hamlet of huts in the middle of the dunes, from where the name of " Carcahuttes " who was given formerly to his inhabitants by their neighbors of Audresselles, is primarily in connection with the temporary interest which the successive conquerors eager carried to him to invade England sometimes, sometimes France.

Thus Ambleteuse is the port in the north of Portus Itius that Jules César uses to make leave part of its fleet invasion of the United Kingdom (54 before J.C.).

The origin of the name of Ambleteuse remains dubious: for some, it has a Celtic origin ( Ambleat ), but that does not exclude also the etymology " Hamel Thuys" , name given by the Saxon ones to the 5th century at the time when they emigrate towards the Great Britain.

The king of England Henri VIII made there build two fortified towns to hold to with it in respect the kings of France. These fortified towns will be conquered in 1556 by the king of France Henri II. In the principal one, after having cut the throat of the English prisoners until the last, the French will find stocks of coal of ground and it is the first time that one will discover the use of it on the continent.

At the end of the 17th century, Vauban made there build the fort (Strong Mahon) with the mouth of Slack. It is only littoral which was preserved thanks to the restorations promoted by Doctor Méraut and the Destombe geologist who created for this purpose in the years 1960 l'" association of the friends of the fort of Ambleteuse".

Napoleon i makes modify the estuary of Slack and build a port whose bases are still visible today at the time of the camp of Boulogne, to invade England (1805).

At the end of the 19th century, at the same time as Wimereux, Ambleteuse becomes a vacation resort for the middle-class inhabitant of Lille and Parisian interested by the sea bathings and hunting in waterfowl. Oyster basins are even built in bay.

During the Second world war, the inhabitants of the city underwent an episode of the Régime of Vichy, there was a Center of Gathering from Abroad. Between 1941 and 1943, the Organization Todt makes install artillery casemates on the fort and in bay of the Slack, and the locks on this same river to flood its valley and to avoid the landing of allied planes there.

Today Ambleteuse is especially known like one of the principal centers of the charitable organization the " the Community of the Arch " , whose economic consequences make live an important part of the population of the borough.
