History
Until the 15th century, the borough of Ambert was parcelled out in three specific districts, corresponding to a ternary division of the company: a commercial district, an ecclesiastical and monastic district, and a district “seigneurial”, which “mixed” starting from the construction of the strengthened enclosure known as of the 19 turns (disappeared today).Ambert was very tested by the continuations of the Massacre of the St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. A band of Huguenots, ordered by the captain Blackbird, seized the city in 1574 and made there undergo plunderings, massacres and other maltreatment with a population mainly catholic. The city was then taken again by the catholics.
In a more peaceful register, the history of Ambert and all the surrounding communes is indissociable manufacture of the paper pulp containing rag of vegetable origin (hemp and flax), to which devoted themselves more than 300 mills to XVe century. The paper Masters had received their know-how of Italian Masters. The first pullings of the Encyclopedia or reasoned Dictionary of sciences, arts and the trades of Diderot and of Alembert, were printed besides on paper pulp of Ambert.
The brigand and smuggler Mandrin made a passage to Ambert on October 12th 1754; there always exists in the city a Tour Chuck .
The progressive decline of paper industry, starting from second half of the 18th century, was partially compensated by rise to power, as of the 17th century, of the trades of weaving, passementerie, the braid and the lace, the embroidery and the manufacture of chains.
